In Search of the Castaways; or the Children of Captain Grant edition by Jules Verne Reference eBooks

The story is first-rate Verne, but the format is so disappointing, I felt I couldn't give better than a 3-star rating.

I understand the self-publishing thing, and am grateful for it, since this book is so hard to find in English. But who chose this format? Anything this over-sized should have two columns per page, or lots of illustrations to break up the text, or extremely wide margins. Just running the text straight across the pages without a break is tedious to the eye and unpleasant to read, not to mention awkward to handle.

Printing every foreign word in ALL CAPS is another mistake. It jars the reader every time, taking you out of the story to silently ask, "why?" Italics would've been a much better choice.

Then there are the errors common to so much that is self-published: inexplicable changes in font, "this page left blank on purpose" in the middle of the text, that sort of thing. Though, to be fair, I've seen worse. But a good proof-reading would not be amiss.

So, if this is the only affordable copy you can find, buy it, by all means. It's worth adding to your library. But if there is another choice, you'll probably be happier with that one.

In Search of the Castaways; or the Children of Captain Grant edition by Jules Verne Reference eBooks Reviews

If you like Jules Verne, this is"must" reading. This book is the first novel in the trilogy, followed by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Mysterious Island." Arguably the best of the three, based on humor, character development, geographical information, and story line, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Not as scientifically detailed as other Verne books, I found it easier reading and less Sci Fi. I highly recommend this book.
In the land of the 1800's where everyone is somehow uncommonly prim and proper, an adventure begins. A message in a bottle sends a well balanced group of characters in search of a castaway. The story takes you to Scotland, Patagonia, Australia and New Zealand and a few islands in between.

I chose this book because I wanted to revisit Jules Verne, but wanted to start with his lesser known works. This book is written in such a way to give you all the information you need, yet your mind can fill in the details easily.

Truly enjoyable adventure.
Excellent book, living up to the expectation of Verne's high standards. Lots of geographical interest here, even if it reads sometimes like passages from the Boy's Own Paper.
Jules Verne is very severe on the Indigenes of New Zealand, who have a terrible reputation! The crossing of Patagonia is mild in comparison and only the convicts in Australia are to be feared. Interestingly, the final island in the narrative is one that at one time was believed to exist (on French charts at least) but is now dismissed as erroneous - it was never there.
a running review as he read it.
Being a man of the 20th century he found it difficult to separate the fantasy from today's facts.
He constantly raised points of "illogical" story-telling e.g. People being able to swim through and survive during a tsunami - "rushing waters" and the waters not receding but staying on the land. Having read Jules Verne as a child and not having the inclination to reread I remain the faithful secretary and report his comments. He enjoyed it I'm sure. He gave it the 4 stars.
This edition is terrible! Looks like a crazy computer prepared it without understanding what it did. It seems to be a reproduction of some other edition whose pages were preprosessed at first and then misaligned. You will find beginnings of the chapters hidden inside a page, pages half-empty in their top part (probably a place where an illustration used to be), and even a couple of lines with text "NEW ZEALAND Page intentionally empty".
Do not buy it! Better get 2009 illustrated paperback edition ISBN 0941599809.
I read Mystery Island followed by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea before reading this and have decided the should be read in that sequence. Wonderful stories, filled with a full range of emotions delivered as one might a well structured geography lesson. Every student should have his education capped by this splendid display of the value and use of a complete educational journey. AND-if you're just a reader 'cuz you enjoy it it, jump on this one!
In Search of The Castaways is actually part of a trilogy Verne wrote, the most famous novel of which is 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and the conclusion of which is The Mysterious Island (also a great read). Each book can be read and enjoyed individually and have only the smallest bits of interaction, but they really pop when read together.

Castaways is a true adventure novel. A message from a missing sea captain appears in a bottle, and an entertaining and unlikely group of explorers--men, women, and even children--sail around the world in an effort to find and rescue the wrecked survivors. Most of the story takes place either at sea, in the Chilean wilderness or in colonized Australia, and the heroes have to battle the elements, pirates and cannibals on their way to learning the fate of the men.

The characters are just as unforgettable as the adventures they face the determined orphans who will do anything to see their father again, the daring young sea captain who's just crazy enough to make the trip, and (my personal favorite) the brilliant French geographer who is also, despite his intellect and abilities, the unluckiest person on the world.

This book is a worth read and deserves a spot in anyone's classics collection. And hey, if you can read it for free online, what is there to lose?
