Afghanistan's upper house of parliament has issued a statement backing a death sentence for a journalist for blasphemy in northern Afghanistan.Pervez Kambakhsh, 23, was convicted last week of downloading and distributing an article insulting Islam-reports the BBC.
Peaceful religion my ass! Politicians are quick to pay lip service to Islam, in an effort not to offend, I don't know who, since there's no bigger offense to Islam than declaring war on an Islamic country, ensuring that tens of thousand of muslims die, and keep troops stationed there for years, but that's another issue, that of the hypocrisy of American politics.
None of the Abrahamic religions are peaceful. The only difference is that Christianity has "cooled down" already while Islam has not. As long as people literally interpret the sacred writings there will be violence. Only when people start treating these books for what they are, works of fiction, will this kind of violence go away! I can think of only a few things stupider than sentencing one to death for reading/printing an article from the Internet, regardless of the contents.
And one of them is the idea that there is such thing as a "peaceful"Abrahamic religion!

I'm inclined to agree; both Christianity and Islam are very violent religions. Or, more accurately, both Christianity and Islam are based on a very violent religion (the Abrahamic tradition is, in a sense, a completely separate religion from these two, but still violent). The only reason Christianity has "cooled-down" is because it has changed focus off the punishment for sin, and on to the love your neighbor parts. Sure, there are very evil and violent Christians, but at least they're a minority of Christians. The others are just wrong, but at least they're not so violent.
Islam is still stuck, deciding whether to punish evil or "love thy neighbor." In my opinion, it is just as ridiculous as Christianity, but I object to it overall no more than I object to Christianity, so I'm glad to see a bit of tolerance in the media for Islam. That, and, most Muslims I know are actually more tolerant and loving than most Christians I've met.
That being said, the moment any religion (Christianity or Islam), or any other dogmatic beliefs, are allowed to hurt another human being, then I am forced to say that stance is an evil that must not be respected, and should not be labelled as "peaceful." Militant Islam is doing just that, and so I have to say it is evil.
Fundamentalist, evangelical Christianity is fighting the "homosexual agenda," which is nothing more than the active pursuit of equal rights. As a result, I must call said form of Christianity evil, and give it as much respect as militant Islam.
So, in short, if one's religion is peaceful, I am tolerant of it, even if I believe it is incorrect. But the moment that another human is harmed, then there is no room for "respect."
Both Christianity and Islam, I'm going to pull a Colbert and say, "You're on notice!"
