Waterboarding Update

The US Senate has voted to ban waterboarding as an interrogation technique. The bill now will go to President Bush, who has threatened to veto the bill ( I cannot believe I'm on his side on this one!). The legislation bars the CIA from using waterboarding, sensory deprivation or other harsh coercive methods to break a prisoner who refuses to answer questions. I have previously made my feelings known about the torture/waterboarding issue, so I will not elaborate on this point too much. The only thing I want to add is that rules that completely ban, or allow a practice, without taking into account various complications, generally will leave some bases uncovered. This law, if signed by the President, will mostly accomplish it's purpose, that of protecting people from unwarranted harsh interrogation techniques (a.k.a torture). But God forbid (it's just an expression folks!) we were to face a situation like the one I had previously outlined, we'll find ourselves having this conversation all over again, but the tone and attitudes would have shifted in an other direction.
